Graham, who’s celebrating 40-years in the business, is well known locally having designed and produced street art installations at Buckland Hill railway bridge, Maidstone Bus Station and Whatman Park – to name but a few. Another recent commission was a mural at Margate Station to mark Railway 200, a national initiative celebrating two centuries of railway heritage and innovation.
The We Are Maidstone mural, which is opposite the Stones Wall of Fame, has been sponsored by Brewers Decorator Centres and JD Bush Decorators, which are both based at Viewpoint on Boxley Road.
Graham Upton said: “As someone who grew up in and around Maidstone, I’ve always followed the progress of the Stones over the years, so I was very honoured when I was asked to produce a mural to inspire the team.
While researching images, I came across a fantastic photo by Helen Cooper on a poster celebrating the team’s amazing 2023/24 FA Cup run, and I thought it was the perfect inspirational image.
As I was painting, it was great to see and hear the positive reactions from everyone — the team and manager during practice, supporters, youth teams, members of the public, and especially staff — as the mural progressed.”
Stones Director of Operations Bob Gouldson said: “This has been on my wish list for a few months, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of Brewers Decorator Centres and JD Bush Decorators – a big thank you to Sue, James and Michael for backing this project.
“To see Graham’s sketched drawing come to life was amazing to watch and I am sure everyone who sees it will love this addition to the Gallagher.”
Graham Upton’s portfolio is showcased on Instagram, follow him at shade2_uk.
The Stand Up For The Stones roll call, which was previously on that wall, will be moved to the Genco Stand.
