The Stones have moved up to second in the National League South, three points behind Yeovil but having played two games more, thanks to a double from Matt Rush as Maidstone eased past Truro City.

It would have been understandable if the Stones had been tired and flat after the epic high of Saturday’s victory but Maidstone looked strong and enjoyed the best of the first half. George Elokobi made three changes from the side that beat Barrow AFC with Reiss Greenidge coming in for George Fowler, Razzaq Coleman De-Graft for Levi Amantchi and Matt Rush for Sol Wanju-Smith.

With seven minutes gone, the Stones went close. Sam Corne’s corner was met by Gavin Hoyte and his header was going in until James Hamon intervened with an excellent save to somehow scoop it away from the line.

Truro then had a decent chance. William Dean crossed for Ryan Brett and Lucas Covolan expertly pushed his header onto the post.

Harry Kyprianou had a clipped curling effort from the edge of the box drop just wide of the right post before the Stones took the lead on 28 minutes. Hoyte delivered a great cross deep into the six-yard box and Coleman De-Graft got a touch before Matt Rush finished from a couple of yards out.

Harvey Greenslade then got in down the left but was denied a shooting opportunity by a decent tackle from Hoyte. And for the Stones, Liam Sole put a delightful ball into Rush but Hamon did well to make the save with his foot.

Not long before the break, there was near miss for Truro. A ball into the box from Maidstone was met by Dean and his sliced clearance dropped just wide.

Early in the second half, a driven cross from Bivesh Gurung from the left caused Truro problems. The ball deflected off a defender and Hamon did well to tip the ball onto the bar.

There was then very little to note until Maidstone made sure of the points with eleven minutes remaining. There was a defensive error at the back which let Rush in. His initial shot was pushed onto the post by Ramon but Rush had loads of time to chase down the rebound and leather it in from close range.

With the game five minutes into stoppage time, Truro pulled a goal back. A free-kick was headed in by substitute Tyler Harvey but there wasn’t enough time left for the visitors to rescue a point.
