There was little in the way of goalmouth action in the first half. With three minutes played, TJ Bramble opted for a shot from about 20 yards and it went into the hands of Ben Goode. Just moments later, Sam Oguntayo whipped in an inviting cross and from a decent position, Deon Moore headed wide.
Chesham’s first opportunity of the afternoon came on 25 minutes. David Sesay’s attempted clearance was cut out and Conor Roberts hit the ball straight at Nathan Harness.
Antony Papadopoulos was trying to bring some energy going forwards and when he skipped past two players as he cut inside in the box, it looks as though it was opening up for him. He did get a sight of goal but his effort went into Goode’s arms.
Four minutes before the break, the ball fell to Roberts inside the box and he dragged the ball wide. Then in first half stoppage time, Nathan Minhas spotted Harness off his line and tried to lob the Maidstone keeper but Harness peddled backwards and comfortably clawed the ball down.
Chesham went close on a few occasions early on in the second half. Zak Joseph fired into the Genco Stand before Josh Addae was bought down just outside the box. Alfie Williams took the resultant free-kick and a drew a fine save from Harness who flung himself to his right. Then not long after this, Roberts’ drive from 20 yards fizzed inches over the bar.
Both sides made substitutions and one Hamzad Kargo, lasted less than three minutes for Maidstone as he went in studs up on Addae. The referee, Jordan Crossley, had no hesitation in showing Kargo a straight red card.
Eight minutes from time, Addae got into a good position inside the box and his shot was heading inside the right post. However, once again, Harness made a good save to beat away the ball. And it wasn’t long before Addae was involved once more, this time his effort took a deflection which took the ball not far wide of the left post.
Chesham continued to threaten and substitute Jayden Bennetts came inside Taylor Foran only to lift the ball over the bar.
However, ss the game moved into stoppage time, Maidstone had a great opportunity to take all three points. Substitute Sam Corne was clipped inside the box and a penalty was awarded. Substitute Ruben Carvalho assumed responsibility for the spot kick and his weak effort was comfortably stopped by Goode to ensure the game finished goalless.
