Maidstone United’s eight match unbeaten streak was ended at Truro City. The result means the Stones drop to fifth place in the National League and may end up taking part in a play-off eliminator match.

The Stones had to contend with playing into a very strong wind in the first half. With nine minutes gone, Ryan Law nutmegged Paul Appiah and played the ball into the middle where it was met by Adam Porter who swept his shot straight at Lucas Covolan.

Truro should have taken the lead not long after this. Danny Sullivan nicked the ball off Appiah and only had Covolan to beat but the Maidstone keeper did well to stick out a leg and make a save.

This game might have had a different outcome had the Stones taken the lead on 21 minutes. Sam Corne found himself bearing down on goal and he hit the right post. Jephte Tanga followed up and from an almost impossibly tight angle, got a shot away which hit both the bar and other post before the ball was cleared.

Five minutes later, Truro took the lead. Dan Rooney was allowed to roam forwards and he picked out Tyler Harvey who placed his effort into the right side of the net and past the despairing dive of Covolan.

Then on 37 minutes, Maidstone were made to pay again for some defensive issues. Sullivan gained possession inside the box and despite the best efforts by Appiah, he beat Covolan.

George Elokobi immediately responded by swapping Mo Faal for Sol Wanju-Smith. And unfortunately for Truro, just two minutes after scoring, Sullivan got injured and was substituted for James Melhado.

The Stones struggled to get going after the break. On 65 minutes, Michael Klass worked himself into space for a shot from the edge of the box but his deflected effort was comfortably saved by James Hamon.

For Truro, Sam Bone lost the ball to Andrew Neal. Neal was racing towards the box but Bone recovered well and neatly tackled him. And on 87 minutes, the home side made sure of the win. Substitute Dom Johnson-Fisher went down in the box under a challenge from Raphe Brown and Harvey lashed the penalty into the right side of the net.

With the game in stoppage time, Maidstone got a consolation goal. Tanga’s corner reached Brown and his header crept in to give Brown his second goal inside three matches.
