There was no FA Cup comedown for Maidstone United as they came from behind to beat Dartford. Goals from Harry Kyprianou and Matt Rush, which both came from set piece deliveries from Sam Corne, saw the Stones move up to third place in the National League South.
George Elokobi unsurprisingly made a number of changes from the team that beat Stevenage on Saturday. Raphe Brown, Paul Appiah, and the cup tied Timmy Abraham and Matt Rush returned to the side, with Jephte Tanga making his debut for the Stones.
Tanga looked bright in the first half. On six minutes, he made progress forward before cutting into the box but his shot went well wide. Seconds later, Harry Kyprianou did well and picked out Matt Rush. Rush’s effort was blocked and from the rebound, Timmy Abraham fired over from a decent position.
Then on 17 minutes, and arguably against the run of play, Dartford took the lead. Sam Odaudu went down in the box with Abraham in attendance and from the resultant penalty, Luke Coulson sent Lucas Covolan the wrong way.
The Darts nearly got a second shortly after this but Covolan did well to make a save following a corner. Then at the other end, Sam Corne found Rush who passed to Abraham and he was denied by a good stop from Terrell. From the corner, Corne picked out Appiah at the back post and once again, Terrell did well to turn the ball wide.
Five minutes before the break, Maidstone should have equalised. Corne delivered an excellent cross from the left and the unmarked Abraham powered his header well wide.
There wasn’t much to note in the second half until just before the hour mark. Appiah’s pass deep inside his own half got cut out and was quickly worked to Luke Rooney who miscued his shot and it screwed high and wide.
Then on 69 minutes, Maidstone equalised. Corne sent a dangerous corner into the six yard box and Harry Kyprianou headed into the net.
And five minutes later, the Stones went in front. Another good set piece from Corne saw a free-kick headed down by George Fowler and Matt Rush made sure it went in from close range.
Dartford responded with a double substitution with Jack Smith and Alex Wall coming on. It was Wall who went close as he showed good technique to half volley a long range effort inches wide.
As the game entered stoppage time, Dartford had a chance to level. Coulson put the ball into substitute Lewis Manor but the ball was put behind for a corner.
